TWO KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

Tuesday Morning Opening Keynote Speaker: Dr. Bruce Cairns

Dr. Cairns is the Director North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, John Stackhouse Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Associate Professor of Surgery and Microbiology and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

As a Lt. Commander with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Cairns was on duty and a principle responder to the KAL flight that crashed in 1997 in Guam. Dr. Cairns was instrumental in developing the level of preparedness at the Naval Hospital there which received and managed dozens of critical patients in the morning following the crash of the 747.  Dr. Cairns has served North Carolina as a Burn Trauma Surgeon at the state's Burn Center at UNC. In 2006, Dr. Cairns was named as the Director of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center and is nationally known as a leader in Burn Trauma Care.

Wednesday Morning Keynote Speaker:  Retired Chief Dan Jones

Retired Chapel Hill Fire Chief Dan Jones spent 41 years in the fire service (and) 25 years in Chapel Hill. Most of his life has been spent in public service, leading the Chapel Hill Fire Department through a long period of transition. When he took office in 1990, Jones said the CHFD didn’t provide much more than fire service – but now it also provides emergency medical service, rescue services, and more.

Along the way, Chief Jones and his team faced a number of serious challenges – perhaps most notably a tragic fire in 1996 at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, which killed five students but also led to significant policy changes for new developments that have made our community (and others) much safer.

“That was a horrible tragedy,” Jones says, “but a lot of good came out of it – sprinkler systems in student housing, not only here in Chapel Hill but (also) in other parts of the country – and I felt good about the fact that we were able to turn that tragedy into a lot of positive things.”

When Chief Jones retired, Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt said:  Chief Jones will leave a tremendous legacy – not just with the fire department, but with Chapel Hill town government in general.

“He’s the longest serving fire chief this city’s ever had, (and) he’s seen us through some really tough, challenging times,” Kleinschmidt says. “His fingerprints are over a lot of things – not just the fire department, but (also) the management style of the rest of our organization…
