Hazardous Materials Supervisor
Essential Duties:
Develop and maintain plans and procedures required for safe and compliant management of regulated (hazardous) materials. Maintain current expertise in technical and regulatory aspects of hazardous materials management and communicate that expertise to staff and to University faculty, staff and students as needed for safety and regulatory compliance. Train staff and provide resources using procedures, work practices and concepts, to work in a safe and compliant manner. Supervise and assist as needed with hazardous and radioactive materials pickup, delivery, inspection, characterization, segregation, storage, packaging, disposal and record keeping, and environmental sampling. Supervise centralized chemical purchasing and surplus chemical program. Implement reporting and tracking mechanisms for work performance metrics, facilities status, and regulatory compliance. Plan and schedule work to be implemented by others. Respond to emergency situations pertaining to hazardous and radioactive materials. Manage training programs for hazardous materials management and transport. Consult, advise and assist members of the University community in matters concerning hazardous materials.
Knowledge of:
Federal, state and local hazardous materials regulations research and compliance. College-level chemistry and hazardous materials identification, classification and segregation. Working knowledge of hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal (including reactives, radioactives and biohazards). Inspection and maintenance of complex building safety systems (alarms, HVAC, engineering controls). Environmental sampling, chain-of-custody, testing and record keeping.
Skills & Abilities to:
Supervise, motivate and direct the activities of full-time exempt professionals and student employees. Extensive technical ability to fully comprehend and apply complex scientific principles and regulations to specific situations in a safe and compliant manner. Operate, test and maintain electronic and mechanical analytical equipment and instruments. Confidently and intelligently communicate technical information with staff, customers, management, peers and public. Develop safety procedures and protocols. Develop and present hazardous materials disposal and transportation training. React calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Maintain accurate and concise records. Routinely move 100-pound and heavier objects safely, with appropriate equipment and techniques. Independently make appropriate social and ethical judgments within the organization. Work in a respirator and appropriate level of personal protective equipment. Ability to obtain OSHA 40-Hour Hazardous Worker and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training within one year; DOT/IATA HazMat shipping certification; Hazardous Materials Awareness (to be completed within one year); and Hazardous Materials Operations (to be completed within two years).
Please Note:
A valid Wyoming Driver's License and be eligible and acquire a CDL with a Hazardous Materials Endorsement within 90 days. 24/7 emergency on-call phone duties (usually for 2 weeks every 2-3 months, or as needed). Successful candidate must be able to pass drug and alcohol testing, fingerprinting and TSA background checks.
