The Laboratory Safety Officer carries out the routine technical activities of the department including (but not limited to):
- Perform laboratory survey visits, certifying fume hoods, laboratory accident investigations and emergency response to odors and chemical spills which may occur after hours and on weekends.
- Maintain a presence in the laboratory environment through routine and ongoing visits to research laboratories and other work areas.
- * Ensure that hazardous waste storage and disposal as well as other regulated laboratory activities are in compliance with University policies and procedures and relevant government regulations.
- Work cooperatively with faculty, staff and students to carry out activities. * Collect chemical waste from laboratories and other sites as needed.
- Ensure waste containers are dated upon arrival to central hazardous waste storage facility.
- Perform regular inspections of satellite accumulation areas.
- Carry out monthly laboratory safety training and provide other training sessions as required.
- Collaborate with other Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Materials Officers to accomplish day-to-day and long-term goals.
- Assist in the hazardous waste program as required. Assist EH&S professional staff in conducting special tasks related to health and safety. Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Science (Chemistry, Biology or Environmental Sciences preferred) or equivalent. Minimum two years' experience in environmental health and safety, preferably in a laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of the structure of occupational and environmental health and safety activities related to biomedical research is desired.
- Laboratory safety training experience preferred.
- OSHA 40-hour Certification preferred; RCRA and DOT certifications a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills a must.
- Computer literacy required including knowledge of MS Office applications and databases.
- Ability and maturity to carry out activities with minimum supervision.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and manipulate a full 55-gallon/400 pound drum using a drum cart.
- Ability to wear a respirator.
