IMPLEMENTATION OF AN IP BASED VIDEO IMAGE SMOKE AND FLAME DETECTION SYSTEM

Large volume spaces such as atriums, field houses, and auditoriums present a challenge to conventional
detection methods due to the large smoke transport time that will delay notification. This session
covers the implementation and use of video image smoke and fire detection systems in a selection of
applications. An overview of the technology will lead to the adjustments that have been made to
the testing and certification of this technology. As a smoke and fire detector the technology is required
to be approved by a listed agency such as UL or FM to meet the requirements of NFPA 72. This discussion
of the technology will lead to the implementation of the technology at these large volume sites to prevent
delayed detection.

Mr. Lynch has been employed by Fike Video Image Detection since December 2005, and has served as the manager of technical services. As the manager of technical services he is responsible for fire related research, the development of Video Image Detection (VID) technologies, approvals testing, certification training and VID system implementation.

He is a member or the Salamander Honorary Fire Protection Engineering Society, the National Fire Protection Association, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and the International Association Fire Safety Science. He currently serves on the executive committee of the Chesapeake Chapter of the SFPE.

Mr. Lynch’s educational background includes: a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. degree in fire
protection engineering from WPI.
